For Museum Thorn, a local museum with deep roots in the region, we were challenged to increase exposure and ultimately bring more people through the museum doors. For a local museum, that can be a difficult challenge. Museums are often associated with being old-fashioned or boring, especially among people who don't immediately see the connection between a museum and their own daily lives.

We saw an opportunity to change that perception by making the stories behind Thorn and the surrounding region more accessible and relevant. Together with a group of highly motivated volunteers, we developed a content strategy focused on bringing local history to life through strong visuals, compelling stories and remarkable objects from the museum.

The objective was bigger than simply generating views. We wanted to build a community around the region, strengthen the connection between people and their local history, increase the museum's reach and encourage more people to participate in local activities, traditions and, ultimately, visit the museum itself.

Between 2025 and 2026, this approach generated more than 1.1 million unique profiles reached through Meta, alongside tens of thousands of interactions and additional exposure across LinkedIn.

Bringing Local History to Life

The starting point was simple: the history was already there. The challenge was finding a way to tell those stories in a format that people would actually stop for, watch and share.

Instead of treating social media as a digital version of a museum brochure, we looked for the stories, objects and details that could create curiosity. A historical object becomes much more interesting when people understand the story behind it. A photo of Thorn becomes more powerful when it connects to something people recognize from their own surroundings. And a local tradition becomes more relevant when people understand why it still matters today.

Together with the volunteers, we continuously translated that local knowledge into content. Beautiful imagery created the initial attention, while the stories and historical context gave people a reason to keep watching and engage. This combination allowed us to reach people who might never actively search for a local museum, while gradually building a stronger connection between the audience and the region.

We also deliberately looked beyond the museum itself. The content was used to highlight local activities, traditions and events, giving people more reasons to engage with what was happening in Thorn. The museum became part of a larger regional story rather than simply a place people could visit.

Making Local Stories Part of the Community

For a local organization, reach is only useful when it contributes to something bigger. A million views can disappear as quickly as they arrive if there is no connection between the content and the community behind it.

That is why engagement was an important part of the strategy. People didn't just see the content; they reacted, commented and shared it. These interactions helped strengthen the relationship between the museum and the people in and around the region.

The strategy also created a way to reach people at different moments. Someone might first discover Thorn through a historical story, later see an upcoming event and eventually decide to visit the museum. Social media therefore became more than an awareness channel. It became a way to continuously keep the region, its history and its activities in people's minds.

1.1 Million Profiles, Thousands of Interactions

Between 2025 and 2026, the strategy generated 1,072,969 Facebook views and 93,200 Instagram views, resulting in a total Meta reach of 1,166,169 unique profiles. The content also generated 19,446 views on LinkedIn, while the Facebook page was visited or searched 32,235 times.

Throughout the strategy, we also kept the available budget in mind. The goal was not simply to maximize reach by spending more, but to create as much relevant exposure and engagement as possible within the resources available to the museum.

The result was a significant increase in the museum's digital reach, but the bigger achievement was creating a platform to connect people with the history, traditions and activities of their own region.

By combining strong visuals, meaningful stories and the knowledge of passionate local volunteers, we turned local history into content that people wanted to discover and share, helping Museum Thorn become not just a place to visit, but a part of the community's ongoing story.
